Hackers Put Porn Vids On Promo Screens Above Asics Store and Detroit Billboard (cnn.com) 56

dryriver shares a report from CNN: Sports brand Asics has issued an apology after "objectionable content" played on the screens above its store in Auckland, New Zealand. Pornographic videos were shown on promotional screens for hours outside an Asics store in Auckland, New Zealand on Sunday morning, the New Zealand Herald reported. The Japanese sportswear brand apologized Sunday, saying the material had been played above its central Auckland store due to a hack. "This morning an unknown person gained access to the screens above our Central Auckland store and some objectionable content was displayed on the screens," said the statement published on Asics New Zealand's Facebook page. Security officer Dwayne Hinagano told the New Zealand Herald that an explicit sex video played for hours and was seen by startled passers-by. "The video ran for a long time, maybe two hours from 8am until the shop staff arrived at about 10am. Some people were shocked, but others just stopped and watched," Hinagano told the news outlet, which also cited witnesses who said the video had been running since 1 a.m. Over the weekend, two hackers managed to upload a porn video to an interstate billboard outside Detroit. According to news reports, the pornography played for about 20 minutes before it was removed.

"Police in the suburb of Auburn Hills said in a statement that the unidentified pair, who appear to be young white men, were captured by video shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday breaking into a building at the base of the electronic billboard on Interstate 75," reports NBC News. "The building, which is surrounded by a six-foot fence and is unstaffed, houses the computer that controls the sign, a police official told NBC affiliate WDIV."

This is part of the problem. These guys who pulled a perhaps tasteless but ultimately harmless prank are being pursued with full vigor. The guys that brought 10 hospitals to their knees endangering thousands of lives......nothing.

But it was POOOOOOORN... think of the children who wanted to see David Beckham wearing the latest Asics shoes on those screens and got to see Buttnado 6: Asspocalypse Now! instead... (starts to cry)

They did a public service by showcasing the wholesome human figure and healthy sexuality in place of advertising for more crap you probably don't need.

Uhh, did you read the post for where it occurred, in New Zealand? It'd be Saucy Sheep Sexcapades or When Baaaa Means Yes or something similar.

You win an internet, your comment is currently the only google search result for Buttnado 6: Asspocalypse Now.

Impressive, but I'd have been even more impressed if it was a real thing.

If you've lived through a riot, you know that the only thing keeping society from degenerating into chaos is the belief that police will maintain the peace. i.e. Security theater. So the police response will be proportional to the publicity surrounding an incident, to make sure the public knows they are "doing something about it," and don't go nuts thinking the end of civilization is nigh. If the media reports a porn hack much more broadly than a hospital hack, then the police will pursue the porn hack more vigorously.

The most extreme example of this is terrorism. The media overreports terrorists deaths [ourworldindata.org] by nearly a factor of 4000x. And our police and military response to terrorism is similarly disproportional.

Well, it's kind of obviously really.

These guys broke the law (hacking, showing porn to minors at the least) and they are likely to be locals and caught on CCTV so the police have a decent chance of catching them.

The guys attacking hospitals with ransomware are probably many thousands of miles away and if they are identifiable it will require some advanced computer forensics. There is also a fair chance they are in a country that won't cooperate with the investigation anyway, such as North Korea or Russia.

    • Well, you can easily imagine a driver being briefly distracted by such imagery and thus causing an accident. It is funny because nothing unfortunate happened. It could have been different.

Hats off to anyone who can hack ASICs, rather than the easy and programmable targets such as FPGAs and CPUs.
    • The ASICs became ASSICs in this case I've been told. Until the screens were shut down anyways. =P

In NZ, they will probably get a stern talking to, which is only a slightly less severe punishment than you'd get for e.g. murder there. But the guys in the US could get the book thrown at them including felonies, seems like a pretty smart thing to do for 20 minutes of lulz.
  • I'm waiting for the day when I walk into a McDonalds or a Burger King one day and see a porno playing on the electronic menu displays.

All it takes is one disgruntled employee who's not earning their $15 / hour...

  • Sports brand Asics

Yes, women loving women is objectionable, while shoes for violent ground acquisition games that are crypto-facist metaphors for nuclear war is A-Ok.

How was it offensive? Bad porn by ugly actors?

  • The crap they usually show is way more objectionable. At least to anyone whose fashion sense is not already in the gutter.

Am I the only one thinking about the first act in Neuromancer reading this?

  • The one in Auburn Hills, outside Detroit, is within, shall we say, spitting distance of Exit 69, Big Beaver Road. Real exit on I-75. Stay classy Michigan!

  • There was probably a DVD player in there. Not even anything with a keyboard and they just changed the disc. If they actually hacked something that would at least be interesting.
