Slashdot's Des2 Efforts

Here at Slashdot, we are obviously big supporters for the whole concept of the technological age. And one of the coolest things going on right now is the work being done at Distributed.net

Follow the link below to read more about it, and our effort towards helping break it.

Why do we want to do this? As various encryption methods are proved to be reasonably crackable, we have stronger ammunition against the government's desires to restrict encryption. If a bunch of computers scattered around the net with some spare time can crack a packet, certainly a focused effort by someone with money could do it much faster.

As of the 19th of January, team Slashdot was ranked 25th overall, with a sustained rate of close to 16,000 kkeys/sec. We're not doing this to get a high ranking, but a little publicity for our little site is a nice side effect. To say thanks, those of us in the management over here would like to recognize the members of the team:

1-22-98: Slight update: we now have over 35 people churning away for us, and we continue to move up the rankings, where we are at 19. Let's keep it up- and catch up to Slovak Team.

So, we encourage all of you to go and grab your personal client, and hook your claws into the DES II challenge. This challenge is on a time limit , so get right. And, of course, if team Slashdot happens to win, any money won as part of the effort will be put in to new hardware for Slashdot. So, do your part, and join Team Slashdot.

To join, simply setup your client, make sure that it is running, and then go to distributed, and add yourself on to the team. Quick, easy and painless. Just like getting the news from Slashdot.
