Automattic Says It Will Start Contributing To WordPress Again After Pause (techcrunch.com) 14

WordPress.com parent company Automattic is changing direction... again. From a report: In a blog post titled "Returning to Core" published Thursday evening, Automattic announced it will unpause its contributions to the WordPress project. This is despite having said only last month that the 6.8 WordPress release would be the final major release for all of 2025.

"After pausing our contributions to regroup, rethink, and plan strategically, we're ready to press play again and return fully to the WordPress project," the new blog post states. "Expect to find our contributions across all of the greatest hits -- WordPress Core, Gutenberg, Playground, Openverse, and WordPress.org. This return is a moment of excitement for us as it's about continuing the mission we've always believed in: democratizing publishing for everyone, everywhere," it reads.

Automattic says it's learned a lot from the pause in terms of the many ways WordPress is used, and that it's now committed to helping it "grow and thrive." The post also notes that WordPress today powers 43% of the web.

Yes but not the Gutenberg editor. Last I used it over a year ago, it created errors by default.

    • Yes, it's literally the most popular CMS on Earth. Over 40% of websites are Wordpress sites.

Your question is like "People still eat at MacDonalds?" and I'm guessing it'd have similar motivations.

Shame Automattic sucks. Hopefully someone else will take over development of the main tree at some point.

People use it when they should be using something else.

There is only two pieces of functionality WordPress even offers, the ability to post a text post, and the ability to post a text comment. And it substantially sucks at doing both.

      it lacks:
      - Any ability to operate as an image gallery, which is largely what WP gets used for
      - Any ability to combat spam, I kid you not that 99.99999% of all comments are spam, and out of the box not only does WP not have this functionality, it does not have a means of prevent

  • So long at the man with too many Ts has the power to continue inflicting his mental issues on users, I wouldn't have anything to do with it. He's shown the world what he is.

Which is hollow, because I haven't played with WP is probably 15 years. But people do ask me what they should run for their small business or vanity domain, and WP ranks somewhere near blogging via a keyboard sniffer.

Except for those who host at competing hosting companies who don't do things we want.

  • Best thing that ever happened to wp was when Automatic stopped participating.
