Microsoft Makes Copilot Less Useful on New Copilot Plus PCs (theverge.com) 48

An anonymous reader shares a report: Microsoft launched its range of Copilot Plus PCs earlier this week, and they all come equipped with the new dedicated Copilot key on the keyboard. It's the first big change to Windows keyboards in 30 years, but all the key does now is launch a Progressive Web App (PWA) version of Copilot. The web app doesn't even integrate into Windows anymore like the previous Copilot experience did since last year, so you can't use Copilot to control Windows 11 settings or have it docked as a sidebar anymore. It's literally just a PWA. Microsoft has even removed the keyboard shortcut to Copilot on these new Copilot Plus PCs, so WINKEY + C does nothing.

    I think some laptops had Cortana buttons as well. I just can't wait for all these AI related garbage apps get burned and Nvidia and Microsoft investors get 1929'd. We have 8 billion humans willing to think, we don't need hallucinating overgrown graphics cards. Nvidia should have already been punished for the Ethereum "money printer" scam.

        • You can kind of tell that Mc Donald's hired back some of the it staff that did the Redbox kiosks when you order via their giant tablet order system. I don't know how you make something so easy so difficult. #1 value meal with diet coke. Instead of two buttons to add, you have to navigate the menu to find the big mac, go through a couple more screens where you decline making any changes, select a drink from a slow loading confusing array, etc etc. So slow...

        That five racks of GPU's are remote, and could handle every MD's order taker in the nation. Hell, the only thing I use the order taker for these days is to tell them I'm here to pick up my order that I placed online. The person in my situation could easily be replaced with a frigging Raspberry Pie, if not a simple Arduino Nano.

          The person handling this situation is also
          - helping idiots who ordered online and then their phone died and don't have any confirmation when they show up
          - helping idiots who promptly trip over their own shoelaces and dump part of the order on the floor (even if you want the idiot to just start over and order and pay for replacements -- someone still has to sweep and mop the mess, put out the no tripping sign, identify that there is a mess to deal with in the first place) -- but most customers kind of expect 'free replacements' at least up to the point they get it to their car.
          - handle forgotten extras request (extra fork, hot sauce, mustard packets, double bag it please, these fries look old, can do it again without salt I forgot to ask for no salt, also, I need salt packets.
          - they also have to hand you your order which may be a single item, or several trays or bags worth, some containing liquids.
          - odds are they packed it for you too
          - he also calls the police when some idiot who is high as fuck passes out in the corner, or pulls his dick out, or ... whatever else.
          - changes the light bulbs when they burn out
          - notices when the door handle is broken, props it open for customers, and calls in for maintenance
          - cleans up the chocolate ice-cream fingerprints your daughter left on the window, the counter, and the wall while you were picking up your order

          Your Nano does all of that right? ;)

            You totally ignored the "The person in my situation" in my statement and went on a rant about people walking into the restaurant. Most places like McD's have a separate person for drive through (sometimes two for the busy hours) from those at the counter.

              A large proportion of the work at at place like McDs is peripheral to your actual assigned 'position' except during rush hour, doesn't matter what that position is.

              Whether its counter staff or drive through... that staff member is cross trained and does double duty to help cover other peoples breaks. And they lend a hand with closing or other maintenance activities. They drop fries or chicken into the friers as needed. They restock their station with lids, cups, straws, and napkins out of the back. If some

          They only have that during the summer; normally it's just Apple Pie, or "Holiday" Pie around Christmas, and Pumpkin in the fall. I am sorry to hear you feel that you are so replaceable though.

    • Ethereum worked out well for me. Bought a GPU, and when it wasn't gaming, it was mining. The electricity was about 3 cents a kilowatt, with rooftop solar reducing the cost even further. Even though the graphics card prices were high at the time, I paid exactly MSRP and the card more than paid for itself over time.

        Yes, yes.

        I bought 20+ and they all paid for themselves.

        I was also able to offload the GPUs when it was pretty high and sell the ETH at its all time high. So much profit.

        I was the writing on the wall when the proof of work was being removed in ETH. Got out before that in GPU and ETH.

      We can't stop progress just because someone needs a job. Where would we be now if we thought that way during the beginning of the Industrial Revolution? There are just too many things that AI, can do, or has the potential to do in the future, much faster and better than any human could ever. It may not be there yet, but it has great potential to further our species along. I do feel human generated art has way more value than that of AI, so we do need a way to distinguish AI generated art from that of hu

      • Assume that self driving vehicles come into fruition. 4 million American men make their living driving. That's 4 million families. You upset that apple cart and you will create a huge social problem. At least Ford had jobs to offer for people in the horse industry. Destroying families and impoverished them is exactly the opposite of progress. Find and create the replacement jobs first.

      I'd agree with you if my retirement account weren't primarily an S&P 500 mutual fund. There's a good chance yours is too.

      • If two companies lose value and it wipes out your S&P 500 mutual fund, then you don't have an S&P mutual fund. You have an S&P 2 fund.

        The who point of the fund investing in 500 companies is to prevent one or two going bankrupt from tanking the fund.

      The only people who are going to be "burned" by AI are white collar workers who are made redundant when the same work can be done by 10% of the team.

    Sounds like Clippy by another name. Someone in power likes the letter C IE Clippy, Cortana, Copilt.
    On another note, I wonder when the update to turn this into full blown CoPilot + Recall goes out?

      I'm not so sure. Clippy could not threaten to post screenshots of your bank account number when you told it to fuck off. Interactions with Copilot might be very different...

  • I'll bet money that their doing it this way so they can be said their not running into another "integrated IE" fiasco in the EU again. Using a PWA makes it easier to change/remove.

  • Microsoft has been making Windows less useful on PCs for years now. Sounds like SOP to me.

      Yep. It is almost like they would like to get rid of Windows or kill it. Considering the mess it is, I can relate. Also note that they are now making most of their profits with Azure. Hence I think they do not even really care about Windows (and Office and the end-user) anymore.

    • What's this SOP thing? In my day Windows used to have BSOD. It was less useful than the Start button for shutting the PC down in a hurry. Is SOP going to be even less useful than that?

    They want to integrate copilot but they also want to charge for it. WHICH IS IT? At first announcement I thought Microsoft was WAY ahead of the curve integrating Copilot. It was going to be an extra feature they had over other software and OS's that gave them the edge. Then.... they decided to charge nearly $400 per year to use it in Office applications... and decided you HAD to use their new PWA version of Outlook to get the features... and now they are creating a dedicated button on your keyboard for what is mostly a paid feature?? This thinking is the reason most of my TV remotes have a Youtube, Netflix, and Prime button on them. It's not out of convenience, it's basically another spot to place an advertisement. They are trying to do the same thing with keyboards. Microsoft has some good engineers but horrible designers and idea folks. Apple is going to eat their lunch with free on device models.
