Disney's Top Asian Video Streaming Service Suffered Outage Due To Apparent Domain Renewal Miss (techcrunch.com) 10
Disney+ Hotstar is suffered an outage for some users in India in the middle of a popular cricket match on Friday, drawing flak from customers at a time when the Disney crown jewel is already facing several setbacks in the South Asian market. From a report: It's unclear what prompted the glitch, which Hotstar acknowledged as "unforeseen technical issues" across its apps and web. Domain registrar records show that Hotstar renewed the domain name, Hotstar.com, on February 17. If Disney had briefly lost the ownership of the domain, it would take some time for the new change to reflect to all users.

Well, they did just lay off a whole bunch of employees recently. Perhaps they accidentally laid off the person in charge of renewing the domain. Disney's been having a tough go of things lately, which is weird because the theme parks themselves still seem to be quite packed, and their USA branch of Disney+ has been increasing its subscriber count.

I'm surprised the domain wasn't immediately purchased and used to serve porn ads. That happened where I used to work when we didn't renew an old domain we used for support on a discontinued product line.

Ouch. At least it wasn't a currently supported product line (or was this event what made it now 'discontinued'?).

I'd assume anyone who knew the domain previously belonged to Disney could anticipate the outcome of registering it for themselves. Disney's team of ravenous lawyers would quickly descend upon them and leave no survivors.

Cheap workers can get pretty expensive. Stupid (and often not-cheap) managers can get even more expensive. Not a problem in any way limited to India though.
