Microsoft's New Windows Feature Experience Packs Are Smaller Updates To Windows 10 (theverge.com) 30

Microsoft has started testing smaller feature updates for Windows 10 in the form of a Windows Feature Experience Pack. The branding appeared inside Windows 10 earlier this year, but Microsoft has only confirmed what the packs will be used for this week. From a report: The Windows Feature Experience Pack will be used to "improve certain features and experiences that are now developed independently of the OS," according to Microsoft. The first feature pack has been released to Windows 10 beta testers this week, and it includes the ability to use the built-in screen snipping app to paste screenshots directly into folders within the File Explorer. The pack also includes a split keyboard mode for 2-in-1 touch devices.

My next computer will not be Microsoft or Apple. I've had it. I'm done with the never ending bullshit

Excuse me, but Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook and Google are banned at my job. That includes devices.
Admin ordered a bunch of custom-configuration PCs, and we basically run our own distro of Linux. Saved a lot of money and gave us immense power in doing what we want. (The more people you are, the more sense it makes to code your own stuff iff necessary.)

I just wish everyone had the choice to work at such a place. :/
        I hope I can. I can't go back to Playboy^WWindows now!

        • Windows would run those exact same apps, but twice as fast and more securely.

        • Business I'm at now started that way. But eventually we got big enough and hired enough "supreme talent" for management that the fantasy of independence crumbled under the wash of, "But everybody else does it this way."

That was the day I said I no longer want to be the IT Manager. I'm a lowly programmer now, and much happier for it. Having to deal with the constant whine of people stumbling into their own created messes was driving me mental.

    • Let's go back to OS/2

Ah yes, comrade, join us. Linux is very nice here.

Agreed. My Windows 7 machine runs perfectly. In fact, I've never had a single issue with it.

Conversely, my Windows 10 machine at work doesn't accept double-clicking all the time, or, if it does, it immediately minimizes what I was trying to open. It's unresponsive at times for no apparent reason, and trying to find things is now a game of hide and seek. It is becoming more and more difficult to go directly to what you want. You have to "search" for it. What sadist makes people search for something instead of going directly to it? Do you have to "search" for eggs when you go to the store?

Then there are the moving of items. Remember when you used to be able to manage a machine right from the desktop? Now you have to either enable this functionality or hop through a multitude of places to do so.

Windows 10 is a shitfest and this is directly related to the beta testers not having a clue how people work or use an OS and the overpaid hacks at Microsoft continually trying to keep themselves relevant by reducing functionality and moving things around simply because they can. For example, what possible reason is there to remove Control Panel? It is a one stop location for almost everything. But nope, everything will be removed in the near future and placed at random in something called Settings. You won't be able to go to the same locations as before to do what you need, you'll have to again play hide and seek.

And don't get me started on the continual harassment of notifications. When I close something, that's what I'm doing. Don't ask me if I'm sure. Just close it. The same with restarting. I shouldn't be told there's a program waiting to close. There should be an immediate severing of the service and the machine restarts, just like what happens when you turn off a light. Nor do I want to be harassed by the flyouts which don't go away for an hour unless you specifically select them, and which hide anything behind it if you happen to be in the area, whereas when it comes time for people to be notified their password is expiring you get a two second notice before it disappears.

Windows 10 just plain sucks in almost every category. It's the final form of Bob which they killed off in less than a year. Unfortunately, 10 will be around for at least another decade, going about harassing people, getting in their way, and making it ever more difficult to do anything useful.

      • Remember when you used to be able to manage a machine right from the desktop? Now you have to either enable this functionality or hop through a multitude of places to do so.

        You're doing it wrong.

      • Windows 10 doesn't always suck. For every pascal of pressure being sucked in one part of Windosws 10 there is another part that has one pascal of blow to balance it out. It is a complicated process to keep the sucks and blows balanced lest Windows start deflating or warping.

      • I'm deathly afraid of the control panel going away. Some weirdness happens with my laptop's ethernet port that it randomly stops working about once every day or two, and the only solution I've found is to go into Network Connections, disable the adapter, and re-enable it. Maybe disabling it in Device Manager would be the same, but who knows? I'm not counting on it. It's going to be some extra clicks anyway.

I have a monitor that I switch from 60 Hz to 144 Hz and back regularly for gaming purposes. I've recen

You can use Setting>Network & Internet>Ethernet>Change adapter options. Currently this will take you to the same place that going the Control Panel route will take you. I hope that when the Control Panel is completely removed that this optional way of getting to the adapter settings stays in place.

Conversely, my Windows 10 machine at work ,,,, ... is a shitfest ...

Not to defend Windows 10, but, unless your home machine is configured exactly the same as your work machine, it's likely not a valid comparison.
I seldom had issues with my Windows 7 machine at home, even though I was constantly adding and removing various programs and applications, adjusting settings and generally mucking around with it. Every issue I did encounter was on me, not the OS.
Meanwhile, my assigned Windows 7 machine at work always had issues, big and small. It was not the OS - there was a const

      • Windows 10 is red hot garbage. So is everything they are coming out with. Teams -- an electron bloated piece of trash. This company has too much pull with the computing and tech world and I wish it would just piss off. Thankfully all of my machines have been running linux for years. I feel sorry for the rest of you.
    • So I guess you won't be ever getting a computer again? I mean after all this continuous OS update is something MS / Apple copied of Opensource. My Linux system updated perpetually long before MS made it cool.

      So, Linux then? ChromeOS (ew)?

  • Right now Windows updates for my customers is often painful. Random bugs pop up. Some I've read about and can easily mitigate. Others are just odd and don't have easy fixes other than to recommend a rollback, which MS will undo soon anyway for Home and Pro users that aren't IT geeks, which is most people. If this actually helps, I will love it. Windows 10 needs stability, now more than ever. I know they can do better.
    • You're not any better of with MacOS either unfortunately. Time to embrace Linux on the desktop!
      • Linux still exists? I heard that everyone jumped to BSD after Debian mainstreamed systemd and broke everyone's feelings.

I'm still waiting for the "No Internet" tag to piss off of my network interface on my brand-new up-to-date Windows 10 laptop with up-to-date drivers, that I've been online with every single day for the last three months, played games, watched movies, downloaded stuff, etc. online.

None of the supposed fixes for it actually work, from disabling IPv6 to pissing about with registry entries to "disable" that check, group policy, etc.

It obviously doesn't like SOMETHING but nobody really seems to know how it's doi

      • It checks some domain to find if there is "Internet". You've likely blocked that connection. E.g. blocked some MS domain or internal service in your firewall.

You can use your other box to MITM the machine, and record the packets, e.g. with Wireshark, to see what precisely is happening there.

        • by ledow ( 319597 )

Yes, that's NCIS. (It does a DNS->IP lookup and confirms the result, and then downloads a particular text file and checks the text, it's to trigger proxies, etc. into authentication).

And no, I haven't blocked anything.

And yes, I've already done that. It literally succeeds.

But still it says No Internet.

The UI clearly was finished a long time ago.

But they gotta justify getting more money from people somehow ... Even if it's the 47th season of The Simpsons.

Start something new and make Windows open source, would ya?

    • The UI clearly was finished a long time ago.

Indeed. And it has remained largely unchanged during feature updates. Maybe read about what you talk about before posting for cheap *derp derp windows bad derp* modpoints.

Start something new and make Windows open source, would ya?

To what end? OSS seems to change UI more frequently than Windows does these days. Shit about the only thing anyone talks about in ${Latest_version_of_GUI} is what it looks like.

But I guess just another ignorant comment brought to you by BAReFO0t.

  • This is exactly what I and my organization needed. More Windows updates.
