Body Found In Canada Identified As Neo-Nazi Spam King (krebsonsecurity.com) 90

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Krebs On Security: The body of a man found shot inside a burned out vehicle in Canada three years ago has been identified as that of Davis Wolfgang Hawke, a prolific spammer and neo-Nazi who led a failed anti-government march on Washington, D.C. in 1999, according to news reports. Homicide detectives said they originally thought the man found June 14, 2017 in a torched SUV on a logging road in Squamish, British Columbia was a local rock climber known to others in the area as a politically progressive vegan named Jesse James.

But according to a report from CTV News, at a press conference late last month authorities said new DNA evidence linked to a missing persons investigation has confirmed the man's true identity as Davis Wolfgang Hawke. A key subject of the book Spam Kings by Brian McWilliams, Hawke was a Jewish-born American who'd legally changed his name from Andrew Britt Greenbaum. For many years, Hawke was a big time purveyor of spam emails hawking pornography and male enhancement supplements, such as herbal Viagra.

In 2005, AOL won a $12.8 million lawsuit against him for relentlessly spamming its users. More recently, Hawke's Jesse James identity penned a book called Psychology of Seduction, which claimed to merge the "shady world of the pickup artist with modern science, unraveling the mystery of attraction using evolutionary biology and examining seduction through the lens of social and evolutionary psychology." The book's "about the author" page said James was a "disruptive technology pioneer" who was into rock climbing and was a resident of Squamish. It also claimed James held a PhD in theoretical physics from Stanford, and that he was an officer in the Israeli Defense Force.

"I've never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure." - Apocryphally quoted to half dozen people, but fuck if it isn't applicable in this case!
      • The quip is often attributed to Mark Twain, who never said it. The first known and most authoritative attribution is to Clarence Darrow.

        • It's certain that he said it (or a version of it, anyway). It was in his book, The Story of My Life [gutenberg.net.au] .

Every instinct that is found in any man is in all men. The strength of the emotion may not be so overpowering, the barriers against possession not so insurmountable, the urge to accomplish the desire less keen. With some, inhibitions and urges may be neutralized by other tendencies. But with every being the primal emotions are there. All men have an emotion to kill; when they strongly dislike some one they

          • The word na-zi is filtered too, probably to keep the trolls and pointless arguments and flamewars, like this one, to a minimum. Doesn't seem like it's working very well though.

            • It doesn't stop the n@z!s at all, and neither does the ascii art filter that makes it impossible to post code here any more, on a site supposedly for nerds. I just saw a sw@stika spam yesterday. The filters are fucking pathetic, just like the "editing"

              • Yeah, after years of denying the obvious, I went to reddit. Where I can edit my posts. Where anybody can up/downvote and guess what? It works better. It's a lot more fun. Get a lot more useful info, faster.

It's basically the modern day equivalent of phrenology. It's the idea that only certain genetics and genetic traits will attract the opposite sex and if you don't have them, you're SOL. Refer to incel thinking and how they define "chads" if you want further detail.

I could be wrong on that, but that's what it read like to me from what I've read describing incel ideals before.

      • by dryeo ( 100693 )

I did read an interview with his ex-girl friend, who didn't sound particularly upset. So he wasn't a pure incel.

They are the pinnacle example, sure. But the idea doesn't lie just with incels. I only referred to them because that's the easiest way to find writing about this idea. But yeah, I didn't think he was. I mean, he's a neo n*zi spammer so there's lots of other things wrong with him. Saying he's an one just seems like spitting into a tsunami.

          • Guy was a neo n*zi spammer then became a Canadian, vegan who rock climbs and publishes pseudo scientific books about picking up women and falsely claimed to both have a PHD and to have served in the IDF...

Sounds to me like a serious case of mental illness that went untreated for decades. Guy had zero grip on reality.

Everyone hang on a sec. He wasn't a vegan. I know vegans can be annoying in the US and, therefore, an easy target, but he's not a vegan according to the article.

Homicide detectives said they originally thought the man found June 14, 2017 in a torched SUV on a logging road in Squamish, British Columbia was a local rock climber known to others in the area as a politically progressive vegan named Jesse James.

The detectives *THOUGHT* that the body was of a politically progressive vegan named Jesse James. There's no indication in the article that this guy was a vegan.

              • If you read TFA and not just the headline you'll see that Jesse James is an alter ego invented by Greenbaum. Just like Hawke was. The headline can be a bit confusing but Krebs makes it pretty clear in the article.

So yes he was a rock climbing vegan, or at least thought he was. Like I said, sounds like he had some serious mental illness. Or as someone else pointed out he could have been a sociopath. But that's still a mental illness.

I did, I quoted the article. Did you not read that?

                  • You quoted the summary. They thought he was the vegan because he was the vegan. The twist wasn't a case of mistaken identity, its that it was an assumed identity. The guy took on a fake name and invented a persona for himself that included but was not limited to, living in Canada, being vegan and rock climbing. None of that was in question until the murder investigation found out that the person he claimed to be didn't actually exist and it was a fabrication.

But you are really hung up on this vegan thing li

                    • Actually no, I quoted from the article. The summary just happened to have the same line.

Homicide detectives said they originally thought the man found June 14, 2017 in a torched SUV on a logging road in Squamish, British Columbia was a local rock climber known to others in the area as a politically progressive vegan named Jesse James.

                      More recently, Hawke’s Jesse James...

Meaning there's another Jesse James and they thought Hawke was him. You know, like how there was a movie entitled "Bram Stoker's Dracula". Or "Tim Burton's Alice in wonderland" game versus "American McGee's Alice".
I'm not hug up on the vegan thing. You were literally the one that brought it up and attributed it to being unhinged.

I'm just trying to stem a misassociation to a group of people that isn't actually deserved.

That's not what that means. It means the identity belonged to him. Either your reading comprehension is low or you are coming from an intellectually dishonest place. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you aren't stupid. So you have an agenda. What gave it away that he thinks highly himself? The fact that he was a neo-n*zi? You know, the people that think they're genetically superior? No, it was his name that resembled an outlaw. Yeah, that's the one...

      • Is it really that controversial? I thought they had done some cross-cultural studies which found specific body shapes were preferential regardless of culturally defined norms of attractiveness, thus lending at least partial credence to some of the evolutionary biology explanations of mate selection.

I'm sure people have taken it to unproven and unprovable levels of nonsense, but the basic idea that there are some physical traits that are just plain more desirable than others at a primitive level doesn't see

        • Well, I didn't say it was controversial. But it is largely unfounded and less science and more self-affirmation. Regarding the body shape stuff, unless you can find the study that shows what specifically they were going for, I can tell you from personal experience and with my time as an artist, that's not really true. Even in America, the preferred body type has changed from decade to decade, let alone comparing what was considered attractive in early tribes in Africa compared to now. You can even see it i

It likely is the delusional idea that the huge backward step of psychopathy, the absence of a conscience, the ability to shamelessly lie, kill for fun, to derive pleasure from lying to smarter people to trick them into sexually abusive relationships, is some home a social human being step forward. The psychopaths know they are broken and destructive and their ego and fears demand they deny it all with delusional lies of superiority. It's a sickness, how do they succeed in relationships with gullible women,

Why do you libs have to make everything about Trump?

    • "Pick-up artists" use various techniques to seduce women. This book claims to scientifically examine and explain why this works via sociology, evolutionary biology, and evolutionary psychology. I wouldn't doubt that this book was a prelude to another book on how to be a "pick-up artist".

He couldn't have been that smart, he was a neo-N@zi pretending to be a vegan.

      • Was he a neo-N~? I don't see why that couldn't have just been another one of his scams. Apparently he started two neo-N~ groups, along with neo-N~ merchandise, and abandoned it when it didn't seem to pan out for him. His father is Jewish, so N~ism might just be the first thing he thought of as a means to acquire wealth and influence. Something along the same lines as Alex Jones, with his conspiracy theories and shilling of merchandise.

To quote from Fallout New Vegas:
"They asked me how well I understood theoretical physics.
I said I had a theoretical degree in physics. They said welcome aboard."

  • This won't help any of us who are inundated with spam. Not one iota.

Any time a spammer dies - by any mechanism natural, legal, or otherwise - there are more spammers ready to fill the void. We will never be able to kill our way out of the spam problem.

Similarly, we will never ever be able to filter our way out of it either. Filters are a nice stopgap measure but they just start an arms race that nobody can win.

Spam is an economic problem. Spammers don't send spam to piss us off or waste our time. Spammers send spam to make money, period. The only way to stop spam is to stop it from being profitable. It has been shown before that when financial transactions from spamvertised companies to spammers are interrupted, spammers quickly stop sending out the spam for that company. Enough rounds of this and they start looking into new occupations.

Another great Viking victory was at the Green Midget cafe at Bromley. Once again the Viking strategy was the same. They sailed from these fiords here, assembled at Trondheim and waited for the strong north-easterly winds to blow their oaken galleys to England whence they sailed on May 23rd. Once in Bromley they assembled in the Green Midget cafe and spam selecting a spam particular spam item from the spam menu would spam, spam, spam, spam, spam ...

That's the "lame" part of the filter.

      *shakes head*

Look, all you need to know is that hitler was part jew.

It's not about jews. It's about humans.

Also, the palestinians are Humans, and they're using the only means they have to strike back. Calling them terrorists is ridiculous. It's asymmetrical warfare.

        • Fuck you. I remember the Munich massacre.

A tiny drop in the bucket compared to what's happening to the Palestinians. As long as you let it happen to them, you don't get to stand on moral high ground when you complain about it happening to others.

            • What's happening to the palestinians is they're being viciously oppressed by Hamas and Fatah.

That is also happening to them, in addition to being viciously oppressed by Israel. Israel oppresses all Palestinians regardless of their political affiliations.

Bitching at Israel for defending themselves shows you for the amoral piece of shit that you are.

Perhaps that part was his missing ball?

  • Who the fuck uses 'Jewish-born' as a description of someone? That's fucked up.

An officer in the IDF is a neo-national socialist? Really?

This entire summary stinks of character assassination. Maybe he was an absolute cunt, maybe his death is beneficial to society, but this summary was written by someone I can only assume is a twat.

    • Well, his claims about being in the IDF look like a fake background for his nom de plum, and at the top of the linked article there's a picture of a kid I guess is him with the little moustache, NASDAP (can't use the common name apparently, is "lame") flag and t-shirt, but that could just have been a brief fascination or some other teenage BS. Not at all sufficient context to be labeling him as a neo-Nz.

Jews do that. Another example is Mr. Soros. He's "Jewish born." However today he says he's an atheist. I understand most Jews want nothing to do with him.

Being Jewish isn't just a religion. It's a heritage. You're not really one unless you were born that way. It's the only religion that I know of that doesn't want you. It's not impossible, however it's not easy to get in.

So in this context when dealing with what they call the Catastrophe (Holocaust) purveyors I could see why they mention that.

      I'm not a Jew.
