Google Confirms the Nest Secure Has Been Discontinued (androidpolice.com) 26

Google's Nest Secure alarm system, which was discussed on Slashdot for featuring an unlisted, disabled microphone, has been discontinued by Google, though it will continue functioning. Android Police reports: Google released the Nest Guard in 2017 as a simple security system with motion sensors and a keypad, but it never received an upgrade, even as other Nest devices were updated again and again. The product page for the Nest Guard on the Google Store was updated last week with a 'No longer available' message, possibly indicating it had been discontinued. Google later confirmed to Android Police that the Nest Guard will no longer be sold, but it will continue to work for people who have already bought it.

    Dear editors

Your title is about something called “Nest Secure”. Your summary is about something called “Nest Guard.”

I don’t know anything about these products. They might be the same. They might not. But basic editing skills would have you ensure alignment between the headline and article.

Could you please try to add just the tiniest bit of value to the posts as you share them?

    kthxbye

    • The linked-to story is the same, FYI. Also, had you actually bothered to look up the product, the product name was in fact Nest Secure of which Nest Guard was the main hub-like component. There were additional components.

Excellent! I see my not purchasing this has had a detrimental effect on the company.

And why again should I purchase any product/service from Alphabet/google?

Yup. I've got a standard alarm designed and made by a local company that's been around since before Google was a glint in anyone's eye, well supported, and will be around for the indefinite future. They still support models they made in the 1970s, as opposed to Google who will discontinue a product at random after you've paid them a fortune for it. Why would you buy an alarm, or indeed any physical product that they'll just discontinue, from Google?
      • Google didn't pull support from existing customers... they're just refusing to update or sell to new customers.

      • It literally doesn't make any sense to buy anything from Google, only to rent it.

If you have to pay up front, like when you buy a product, just don't. You will regret it.

The only exception so far is Pixel phones, they have gotten more than the industry standard support lifetime. But 1) Google didn't actually make them or even design them except from the 50,000 foot view, they subcontracted them, and 2) They are not even "Google's" first "premium" phones, that was Nexus, and Nexus devices didn't get great su

Just another in a loooong list [killedbygoogle.com] of "discontinued" Google products.

Not sure how they expect anyone to take them seriously at this point.

Google/Alphabet, how can we leverage this new product to drive more traffic to AdWords? PM: I'm not really sure there is a way. Off with his head!
  • ANhone going to buy the next Google hardware ?
  • I'm currently learning a new microcontroller, because the timer built into my boiler has ceased to operate properly, and can be most easily fixed by using a smart thermostat - and with news like this a familiar sight now, I feel more secure building my own smart thermostat from bodge-code and stripboard than I do buying one off the shelf.

I landed somewhere in the middle with this. I bought a fairly cheap Z-wave smart thermostat (Radio Thermostat CT-101) and handle basically all its functions through Home Assistant. No cloud, no vendor support needed, all locally run with completely customizable functions and features, but I don't have to try to reimplement basic thermostat functions like cycling, cycle length, etc.

Only real limitation is likely to be when/if Z-Wave itself goes away, but again I'm running that through Home Assistant with a U

Google recently invested in ADT, a security alarm company. Wonder if this had anything to do with dropping Nest Security?

Real Users find the one combination of bizarre input values that shuts down the system for days.
