US Secret Service Creates New Cyber Fraud Task Force (bleepingcomputer.com) 28

The U.S. Secret Service announced the creation of the Cyber Fraud Task Force (CFTF) after the merger of its Financial Crimes Task Forces (FCTFs) and Electronic Crimes Task Forces (ECTFs) into a single unified network. Bleeping Computer reports: CFTF's main goal is to investigate and defend American individuals and businesses from a wide range of cyber-enabled financial crimes, from business email compromise (BEC) scams and ransomware attacks to data breaches and the illegal sale of stolen personal information and credit cards on the Internet and the dark web. Consolidating the two task forces into CFTF will allow the Secret Service to boost its agents' ability to prevent, detect, and mitigate financially-motivated cybercrime by improving coordination, sharing of resources and expertise, and best practices dissemination.

"The creation of the new Cyber Fraud Task Force (CFTF), will offer a specialized cadre of agents and analysts, trained in the latest analytical techniques and equipped with the most cutting-edge technologies," said Michael D'Ambrosio, U.S. Secret Service Assistant Director. At the moment, the Secret Service has already operationalized CFTFs in 42 domestic offices and in 2 international locations (London and Rome). The Department of Homeland Security federal law enforcement agency also plans to increase the number of CFTF locations through its network of more than 160 offices across the U.S. and around the globe.

If a corporation is considered a person then can, say, IBM or Ford run for president?

    Asking for a friend.

      be incorporated for at least 35 years, check; be at least 35 years old;
be based in Delaware (snicker, just be based in US), check: be a resident in the United States for at least 14 years.

  • I'm assuming the DOD, FBI and DHS have something similar and so should every federal agency that doles out federal funds.

Is there some reason the feds can't consolidate this common function into one group so they are not duplicating efforts?

This reminds me of the fact that so many federal agencies have their own SWAT teams.

One should focus on national criminal activities, another on international criminal activities, and a third on state actors (foreign gov'ts) involved in commercial and political manipulation, and a fourth on military espionage. Whether it's cleanly divided this way is another matter.

Which costs more now, hackers or "protection" from hackers?

    • Consider that 50% of all email is spam.

Saying what costs more, spam or the spam protection fails to understand that, if we stopped spending on spam protection, the email system would become 99% spam, and thus unusable.

So this analogy applies to cyber crimes, if you didn't spend to protect from it, it would quickly grow to the point where it would stop normal use of internet for anything other than looking at cat videos, as long as you take care not to click on them.

    • That's an interesting question, and it's related to a very important question. Part of my job I answering the question "if we spend $x on this new security initiative, can we expect to save more than $x?". Right now I'm in the process of decomissioning one system because it wasn't worth the marginal cost, and evaluating another one to see if we should spend on it.

Precise numbers for total costs are hard to get, but we can get a feel for the numbers.

For the moment let's look at just one specific type of t

Just where is this task force supposed to carry the shit when the biggest fraud is the boss?

  • Finally the cyber police has arrived! It's time to backtrace!

  • What a fucking smokescreen. Donald Trump crimes every day while the Secret Service looks anywhere but the Commander in Thief.

What happens when they can't do their main job because it's too difficult? They'll find low hanging fruit to persecute.
