Nvidia Says Employee, Company Information Leaked Online After Cyber Attack (cnn.com) 9

U.S. chipmaker Nvidia said on Tuesday a cyber attacker has leaked employee credentials and some company proprietary information online after their systems were breached. From a report: "We have no evidence of ransomware being deployed on the Nvidia environment or that this is related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict," the company's spokesperson said in a statement. The Santa Clara, California-based company said it became aware of the breach on Feb. 23. Nvidia added it was working to analyze the information that has been leaked and does not anticipate any disruption to the company's business. A ransomware outfit under the name "Lapsus$" has reportedly claimed to be responsible for the leak and seemingly has information about the schematics, drivers and firmware, among other data, about the graphics chips.

  • Maybe hacking them back wasn't such a great plan. Seems like Nvidia upset them and they released a load of Nvidia's data in response.

      Seems like the only plan. Releasing the data was always part of the hacker's plan. They were holding it to ransom demanding that Nvidia unlock RTX 30xx series LHR cards for mining. Nvidia said no.

      The hacking has nothing to do with the release, ... unless the hackers were originally bluffing in which case they would have been incredibly stupid.

  • But yesterday's news was that NVIDIA (illegally?) hacked the hackers back and encrypted all their files? I guess that story was BS (and it sounded like it) or the hackers made a backup copy (which NVIDIA would have been ignorant not to assume).

  • Attempting to save people from the insanely ad-ridden CNN webpage (can't put an adblocker on my work computer), TFS is missing some formatting and this paragraph:

    that seems completely unnecessary for those of us who frequent this site.
