HDMI 2.2 Debuts, With an 'Ultra96' Cable For Tomorrow's Displays (pcworld.com) 49

The HDMI Forum has announced HDMI 2.2, doubling data bandwidth to 96Gbps through new "Ultra96" cables while maintaining compatibility with existing connectors. The specification, scheduled for release to industry adopters in first-half 2025, promises higher resolutions and refresh rates, including 4K at 480Hz and 8K at 240Hz.

A new Latency Indication Protocol aims to improve audio-video synchronization in multi-device setups. The Forum emphasized applications in AR/VR, medical imaging, and digital signage. Implementation requires both new Ultra96-certified cables and compatible devices, with anti-counterfeit measures included in packaging.

What's with the ads bleeding through even with uBlock origin? I can't even manually block them using the tool.

They're sporadically dicking around with "html-load.com" inclusions and it's very annoying. I've had luck blocking all the "as.slashdot.com" sub-domains to prevent the ads from appearing. Can't seem to get rid of the white-space though... Thankfully, it's not all the time -- yet. If that happens and the site becomes unreadable, I might have to bail on /. after many, many - many - years.

Thanks for that. adding those two sites to the hosts file seemed to have worked, even for white space... but who knows how long that will work. Wish Slashdot would bring ad-free subscriptions back.

    • Disable javascript, and deal with the clunky interface but be ad free.

      And it's so fucking slow!
The ads seem to come through about 5 seconds later, while the page jerks up and down.

      Enshittification.

There was a submission some time ago, but the story was mysteriously spiked...

  • new "Ultra96" cables

Monster Cable will license their name to someone selling gold-plated versions.

[ Then Trump will sue them asserting that's his thing. :-) ]

  • only $99.99 for an 6FT monster cable!

  • Screw compatibility with existing connectors. The existing connector is too short and flimsy. Existing cables already put too much strain ( weight and stiffness of the cable to bending ) on the connector for it to last long without being torqued out of shape and sometimes requiring the cable to be supported just so to get a good connection. Make the connector deeper and more robust or add screws or latches like some of the old scsi or printer cables used to have to keep them inserted just right.
  • Oh yes, an arbitrary specification is the best way for the public to remember what is important about that cable. That it has a 96 on it.

Guessing the same morons from the USB forum(s).

Probably. These people do not understand that at some point no new standard is needed for quite a while. Or maybe they do but are unable to find other jobs due to limited skills...

      "Ultra 69" would've been nicer.

  • I spend more money on cables than on computers.
