French Porn Block Fails on Site URL Detail (techcrunch.com) 33

A Paris court order to block porn website xHamster in France over insufficient age verification has resulted in an unintended loophole. The ruling only restricted "fr[dot]xhamster[dot]com" subdomain following nonprofits' complaint, leaving the main site accessible despite the DNS-level block by internet providers.

Not that a DNS block does much anyway.

Yeah, they just blocked social media sites on school networks here in Ontario, and the kids told me... "just set your DNS manually to 8.8.8.8 and you can still get to Discord", so they're clearly just DNS blocking.

But the next step would be to block whole /24's and that ensnare all kinds of legitimate traffic. Wikipedia does this for troll/spam submissions and the result is that wireless users, basically, can no longer post without accounts.
      • My experience with Ontario schools is that they are very, very bad at IT.

Though (thankfully), I've never found any porn on their networks, and I've had to do content reviews a few times.

        • Hang in there. They're scheduled to migrate from Netware 4.11 in 2028.

            .... to IntranetWare [novell.com]

          • I migrated a few off Novell in the lead up to Y2K, which in my opinion was already far too late.

What I see today is typically a threadbare, mismanaged Microsoft environment with remote access outsourced to Google. This actually really pisses me off, since one IT guy could set something up for an entire district that ran 99% on free tools. Schools aren't doing anything that requires paying Microsoft or selling out the kids to Google.

Indeed. Even kids know how to get around it. And there are probably a lot of horny teens with Tor-Browsers installed anyways.

The whole thing is bogus. If this were a real problem, we would have long since seen the effects. We do not. Hence just the usual pearl-clutching by the usual prudes and censorship fans.

Yep, you end up playing whack-a-mole with proxies (or just pretending that the DNS block somehow magically works). There's a million and one ways around a DNS block.

This is all just a ploy to get people watching arthouse cinema again just to see le nichons.

Slashdot, you don't have to obscure the domain name for us. Seriously, if you were worried it would come out as a clickable link and outrage someone's sensibilities then you could have just asked one of us how to keep it plain text.

I'm really tempted to click in just to see what it is they want to block.
      • Apparently it's just a bunch of Wrecking Ball r34.

      • It's a porn site.
      • I'm really tempted to click in just to see what it is they want to block.

        It's a generic porn site.

It has photos and videos of nekkid chicks.

It would've taken you about five seconds to see for yourself.

        • It's a generic porn site.

It's a porn "tube" site, which there actually aren't too many of those left anymore. I'd assume that if the market was there, companies would step up to fill the void, but I think most of the amateur adult entertainers have moved on to live cam streaming sites and hawking their OnlyFans pages on Reddit's porn subs.

Also, they have gay porn too, so it's not just naked women. Granted, the majority the non-paid gay porn seems to be in glorious 240p, so it's not exactly all that titillating. It's like anythin

It's either porn or French porn. :-)

  • I expect this ruling (and /.) will boost traffic to that site significantly.

    Well done.

Nah, I had a quick look but it's lame. No Goatse. No ASCII nudes. No hot grits. Never going to catch on with the refined tastes of the /. crowd.

I did not see any hamsters there, they should be sued for false advertising
  • There is no way to do it anonymously. It will result in more data collection and erosion of privacy.
