Russia Says 'Unprecedented' Cyberattack Hits Foreign Ministry Amid BICS Summit (reuters.com) 65

The Russian Foreign Ministry says it had been targeted by a large-scale distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS). "A massive cyberattack from abroad began this morning on the infrastructure of the official website, the Russian Foreign Ministry's portal," said spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. She noted that the ministry regularly encounters similar attacks, but today's attack was "unprecedented in scale." Reuters notes that the attack coincided with the major BRICS summit taking place in the country.

Even if nobody voted for Putin, he'd still win. Such is the power of a virtual dictator in a sham democracy.
        • Was talking to a Russian today who was going on about how popular Putin is in Russia, how he's done such great things for the country, how he's very pro-Russia and putting Russia first... all I could think of while listening was that you could have substituted Hitler for Putin and Germany for Russia while keeping everything else word-for-word and it'd have been true too. It's scary how totally immersed they are in this stuff.
          • It depends on who is listening. Russian walls have ears.
          • Also works if you replace Netanyahu for Putin and Israel for Russia.

It is scary how totally immersed they are in this stuff.
            • Not really. Israel still has high-quality independent media like Haaretz and proper opposition, while Putin learned from "no truth in Pravda, no news in Izvestia" and allowed token independent news sources (which know exactly what they can and can't say) and token opposition parties (which know exactly how far they can go), both creating the illusion that a one-party state with controlled media isn't really a one-party state with controlled media.
          • Russia first? Now, where do we have heard a similar saying again :-)
      • Makes you miss the good old days when President Obama mocked his opponent for saying that Russia was a threat, right? Remember how he said "The Cold War ended 20 years ago!"? He also said "elections have consequences." This is one of them. So was Ukraine's loss of Crimea, under Obama's watch. If you support Russia, then please Vote Blue, No Matter Who. If you actually care about Ukraine, it's time to vote red.

A fella I used to work with over a decade ago in some unspecified corner of the defense industry was not a fan of the Israelis playing hardball with Iranian nuclear program personnel. Not because he was a Jew hater or an Islamist sympathyzer but because he wasn't keen on having it become the rule that guys in their position (that is, his position) now had targets on their backs.

If we don't like it when our government or infrastructure gets hacked by foreign actors, best not to overtly do it to the other guys? Maybe there's something to the idea that you've always got to give your enemy an offramp to at least save face unless you plan on eliminating him entirely.

The enemy has an off ramp: Get the fuck out of Ukraine. Seems like a pretty clear ramp, comrade.
      • You'd think so, but there he is. Clearly there's a psychological dimension you're not considering. Possibly because you're a dyed in the wool westerner who cannot conceive of a world leader of a nominally advanced country placing Tribe and Land front and center in his thinking. So instead of trying to get into his head so as to understand the problem, you chalk up his motivation to generic evil and then pretend you can deal with him on your terms alone, rather than his, and get results.

a world leader of a nominally advanced country placing Tribe and Land front and center in his thinking

Of course we understand that. The muscovite midget is trying to recreate the Soviet Union, believing he is entitled to everything which it previously ruled. The problem is, what he considers Tribe and Land is a farce. He keeps referring to Ukrainians as his "brothers", yet everyday he's killing those very "brothers" (and sisters. Not to mention raping those sisters). If he is so concerned about his "brothers", why is he killing them?

He's the typical, delusional ruler of Russia. His country hasn't advanced in any meaningful way in the past 100 years and his two week military operation shows it. He has nothing but contempt for the people of Russia, many of whom don't even have running water or toilets in their hovels. With all that money Russia has received from oil sales over the decades, one would have thought their streets would be paved in gold. Instead, he and his cronies siphon off billions for their own benefit, leaving the people to scrap for whatever is left.

His country is so weak, it's now resorting to using North Korean soldiers [newsweek.com] to fill the depleted ranks of his military, not to mention using strategic nuclear force troops as infantry [newsweek.com].

The faster we give Ukraine the weapons it needs, the sooner this will be over. They've already shown they can strike targets 1,000 km inside Russia with their own homemade weapons, imagine how impactful western weapons can be against the inept Russian forces.

          • They've already shown they can strike targets 1,000 km inside Russia with their own homemade weapons, imagine how impactful western weapons can be against the inept Russian forces.

            Probably less so.
Russian equipment and training (such that it is) is largely designed to counter known western weapons, and Ukrainian weapons are something entirely new which they have not been prepared for.

Also Ukraine is not new at this, they have plenty of experience building weapons - many of the weapons used by both sides are old soviet stock, and a lot of that was built in Ukraine. Even the cruiser moskva which was sunk a while back was actually built in Ukraine.

        • Possibly because you're a dyed in the wool westerner who cannot conceive of a world leader of a nominally advanced country placing Tribe and Land front and center in his thinking.

Which is it, do you fear the nationalist agenda or do you love nationalism? Make up your nutjob "mind".

Problem is, tovarich, if Putin does that he's fucked six ways from Sunday... of course if he doesn't he's still fucked five ways from Sunday but I digress. If he pulls out of Ukraine, he'd be very well advised to avoid high windows, flying or tea as the other oligarchs (the one's he's promised very lucrative parts of the Ukraine and to get western sanctions dropped) will see to his short, unceremonious demise. Of course as he can never win in Ukraine, that bit will happen, just a bit later.

          • You can do better than an open-ended half-assed war. You can draw a line on the map that neither the Russians nor the Ukranians like and act like you'll enforce it.

You'll have to explain to me how humoring Ukranian dreams of taking back Crimea while only giving them enough to only be overrun slowly (rather than quickly) makes any kind of sense compared to my idea.

LOLOLOLOL. Your LLM is hallucinating again, probably because you need to keep feeding it electricity. Maybe Hungary can lend you a battery to use, but Kyiv is about to experience freezing temperatures, so keep it hidden.

Russia has been hacking US infrastructure for years, hacking the US government [wikipedia.org], and hacking US political parties with the goal of influencing the US election.
