Everyone seems to be buying a mechanical keyboard company these days. Corsair has one-upped them all by buying its own mechanical keyboard company. From a report: The Fremont, California-based peripheral maker today announced that it's acquiring "certain assets" from Drop for an undisclosed, all-cash deal. "Drop has been acquired by Corsair," Drop CEO Jef Holove wrote in a blog post confirming the news. "I am sure front-of-mind for you is what this will mean for Drop and our focus on our discerning, engaged enthusiast community -- especially at a time when we've been watching other players in the community struggle or outright fold. Obviously, we are convinced this move is good for us, for you and for the hobby, and I'll give you a sense of why here."
The executive called the Portland-based company "small but mighty," relative to a product portfolio that includes several keyboards, keycaps and audio accessories. Mechanical keyboards are the company's bread and butter, and it makes fine hardware. I've been using the Drop Shift keyboard now for several months. The firm is also notable for high-profile branding exercises that include keycaps featuring Lord of the Rings and Marvel IP.

It is also factually wrong, because Corsair has been making mechanical keyboards themselves for years before Drop (previously known as Massdrop).
BTW, Drop's most well known keyboards had originally been created in a partnership with enthusiast collective Input.Club, with the original designs [github.com] released under the CERN Open Hardware license.
Drop and Input.Club had a falling-out after Input.Club had been dissatisfied with some components that Drop had sourced, and after that Drop has sold slightly revised designs under other names.

Drop does not sell vintage keyboards. They have sold some keycap sets made to resemble some classic vintage designs though.
Yes, I have been guilty of doing what you describe, back when I first got into mechanical keyboards. I don't do that any more.
Some of the best trades I've done in the collecting hobby have been with enthusiasts of vintage hardware.
And I swear at younguns who buy a vintage keyboard, harvest the key switches and throw the rest of the keyboard away.

Yeah, that sucks. There's also the guys that go around destroying vintage computers for their precious metals.
There is no way in hell that you can get any positive returns doing that.
You'd get like 4 bucks per computer.
