Nvidia GeForce Now on Chrome is Getting a Big Upgrade To 1440p and 120fps (theverge.com) 9

Nvidia is upgrading its GeForce Now game streaming service to support 1440p resolution at 120fps in a Chrome or Edge browser. GeForce Now members on the RTX 3080 tier of the service will be able to access the new browser gameplay options today by selecting 1440p on the GeForce Now web version. From a report: Nvidia originally launched its RTX 3080 GeForce Now membership tier last year, offering streams of up to 1440p resolution with 120fps on PCs and Macs or 4K HDR at 60fps on Nvidia's Shield TV. Previously, you had to download the dedicated Mac or Windows apps to access 1440p resolution and 120fps support, as the web version was limited to 1080p at 60fps.

  • When the gaming industry goes the way of the video one.
    • You can still buy media on physical disc, the media is actually on the disc, and for the most part you can play it without phoning home for permission. And if you are crafty, you can rip the video from the disc, and burn it to a new disc without protection, or stream it from your own servers.

I only wish gaming would go the same way as video. It used to be that way. Now you buy a disc in the store, you bring it home and install the launcher. Then the launcher either installs the game, or it updates itself an

For games maybe, but movies and such, not likely.

It'll be a niche format - there will be DVDs still (why they are around, I have no idea, but they are stupidly cheap) still sold in stores because well, not everywhere can stream.

And there will be Blu-Rays and UHDs because people want better quality than can be achieved by streaming (t

          • physical copies will play without any licensing BS and will always be there

A few people have had actual problems playing some Blu-Ray movies (as in they couldn't) because their player was too old to get updates, and the new movies needed new keys. This is very rare, most people mastering the discs seem to be smart enough to know that the movie will be copied no matter what they do — so why be tricky? But every so often someone thinks this time for sure.

You can still buy discs for consoles (for now) but on PC, I haven't seen one since... Doom 2016 I think, and even that was just the first disc and you had to continue downloading the rest of the game online after it installed. It essentially just gave you a jump start on the download. Today if you buy physical media for PC games, what you will end up with is a box with a slip of paper with a code for steam/Battlenet/EA Origin, etc inside of it. The fancy ones print it on a CD shaped piece of cardboard clip
