New submitter Computershack shares a report from the BBC: A global police operation has dealt a devastating blow to one of the most prolific cyber-crime gangs in history. The co-ordinated action against the REvil gang was announced on Monday by Romanian police, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and Europol. The raid, which took place both on and offline, led to the arrests of two alleged hackers in Romania and one accused cyber-criminal from Ukraine. REvil has been blamed for major hacks on global businesses in recent years. The US also announced that it had successfully retrieved more than $6 million in cryptocurrency from the gang in a so-called 'claw back' hacking operation.

Another alleged REvil operative, Russian Yevgeniy Polyanin, 28, has also been charged by the US with conspiracy to commit fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering, among other charges.
Russia is unlikely to extradite its own citizen to the US, so Mr Polyanin is expected to join a growing list of wanted alleged Russian hackers.

Yes, Russia after all. The reason no Russians were arrested is that Russia was not a participant in this crackdown.
The group is a multinational organization that conducts its business in Russian, but there's basically nothing we can do about Russian members, who prudently stay in Russia where they are beyond the reach of extradition.

We already have billions of dollars in Russian oligarch's assets frozen in the west as a result of sanctions. Just reimburse anyone harmed by these hackers from there.

Unfortunately in lands of law (unlike Russia) taking one person's money frozen for one reason doesn't meant it can be handed out to others for a completely separate tangential reason.
We have laws against racketeering, and forfeiture is indeed a potential penalty.
they're there as a carrot to people who got rich off Putin's dictatorship to say if you get Putin to stop invading his neighbours, committing war crimes in Syria, carrying out nuclear, chemical, and biological assassinations on Western soil, and generally trying to sow chaos in the world, including harboring hackers, then you can have your money back.
