McDonald's Hit by Data Breach (wsj.com) 43

McDonald's said hackers stole some data from its systems in markets including the U.S., South Korea and Taiwan, in another example of cybercriminals infiltrating high-profile global companies. From a report: The burger chain said Friday that it recently hired external consultants to investigate unauthorized activity on an internal security system, prompted by a specific incident in which the unauthorized access was cut off a week after it was identified, McDonald's said. The investigators discovered that company data had been breached in markets including the U.S., South Korea and Taiwan, the company said. In a message to U.S. employees, McDonald's said the breach disclosed some business contact information for U.S. employees and franchisees, along with some information about restaurants such as seating capacity and the square footage of play areas.

The company said no customer data was breached in the U.S., and that the employee data exposed wasn't sensitive or personal. The company advised employees and franchisees to watch for phishing emails and to use discretion when asked for information. McDonald's said attackers stole customer emails, phone numbers and addresses for delivery customers in South Korea and Taiwan. In Taiwan, hackers also stole employee information including names and contact information, McDonald's said. The company said the number of files exposed was small without disclosing the number of people affected. The breach didn't include customer payment information, McDonald's said.

    Will the secret be exposed? Will the entire world know the McDonald's burger is just a slab of tasteless cardboard badly cooked, badly prepared, haphazardly-arranged, and carelessly served?

    I stopped going there years ago. When I noticed my burgers looked like they came out of a shotgun and the workers simply DGAF. Really, if the McDonald Bros. saw this, they'd die all over again. Ditto for Ray Krock.

    I have zero nostalgia for McD's. It's descended so badly from where it was in the 1980's it's into the negative-suck category now -- sucks so bad, it bends light.

      Cheer up and look on the bright side. They do have consistency going for them.

      Fucking ice cream machine went down with the Berlin Wall, and that turned it into standard corporate policy.

          Exactly.

          They do need to be maintained properly. But if every other chain can keep them running, this isn't a hardware problem. It's a corrupt McProblem that for some reason Taylor wants to literally hang their reputation on.

              Almost every other chain is using a different model machine, made by the same vendor (Taylor).

              That's the reason I said this was a corrupt McProblem. Taylor has specifically developed a machine that is only sold to McDonalds, and is purposely deploying that utter shitware to maintain recurring maintenance revenue, which they brag is upwards of 25% of the total revenue.

          The vendor actually was spun out from McDonald's, which is why they have such a cozy relationship.

          • I still consider that right to repair. It's a form of vendor lock in or tieing. In different contexts what they are doing is already illegal. Just because its a franchise agreement shouldn't make legal.

      • I really don’t know why so many people buy their ice cream. It’s barely dairy based and full of stabilizers. If I want ice cream I buy the good stuff from a dedicated shop.

    • Thankfully, McDonalds never asked for your phone number, email, or zip code when you just wanted a burger, so it shouldn't impact customers.

      Nothing at all with their food has changed since the 80's. The difference is that now you realize it is crap.

      And what do you expect from 2 cheeseburgers for $2.00? It fills a market need and does it well.

      No need. They already died when Ray Kroc stole McDonald's from them. McDonald's made billions, while the McDonald brothers died broke because Kroc put them out of business.

      Ray Kroc could die again and I wouldn't care. He stole the business from the McDonald brothers through crafty legal shenanigans. He was a brilliant businessman, yes, but one free of ethics.

      ... which are "broken" not because of any technical reason but because their upkeep is considered non-profitable by the franchise holders.

  • ... if only to to ask for increased insurance premiums from those who frequently paid (non-cash) at these fast-food outlets.
  • McDonald's announced in 2019 that they were making a women-only cybersecurity training pathway with a special school program. That was part of their public stated and claimed women-first initiative related to hires and promotions. There is no way that all those women security professionals who graduated or studied in that women-only exclusive program allowed their firm to be hacked. Not a chance. I don't believe it.
