Hackers Target Iconic Japan's Toshiba Rival Hoya With Ransomware (bloomberg.com) 17

A group of hackers executed a ransomware attack on Hoya, marking the second successful attack suffered by the Japanese firm in two years. From a report: "We can confirm that Hoya Vision Care US has experienced a cyberattack. Based on our initial forensics, the disruption appears to have been limited to our United States systems," a Hoya spokesperson said. "After identifying the threat, we quickly took action to contain it and contacted law enforcement. The company has engaged external experts to determine the nature and scope of this event. We will provide updates as more information becomes available." Hoya, named after the West Tokyo neighborhood where it was founded in 1941, is a glassmaker with about 37,000 employees worldwide and about $5 billion in annual revenue. The company gets last year 65% of its sales from contact lenses and glasses, while the rest comes Information technology devices and services such glass substrate used in the manufacturing of semiconductors and hard disk drives, according to 2020 company's report. The hacker group called Astro Team said on its blog last week that it targeted Hoya servers and stole about 300 gigabytes of confidential corporate data including finance, production, email messages, passwords and safety reports. In 2019, Hoya suffered a major cyberattack, infectong over 100 computers and forcing the company to shut down its factories for three days.

  • Takes two years to recover from previous attempt and come up with a new system. Right?

    • Never heard of Hoya, but turns out it's within bicycle distance distance. Looking at the original Japanese, it makes me think of something like "safe valley", or maybe "protected valley".

Now what was the point of that FP?

Solution approach? Take away the money.

Only good side of the story is that at least this time no one is likely to die from bad eyeglasses.

      • Never heard of Hoya

Obviously you're not a photographer or you would know they make lens filters for cameras.

They're also a large supplier of spectacle lenses.

Actually I was an amateur photographer at one time. My first SLR was a Kowa. Ever heard of them? Actually, I was surprised to see that they apparently still exist.

There's actually a little camera museum somewhere around here for another esoteric brand. Embarrassed I can't recall the name just now, though it's a moderately well known one. Fuzzy recollection is that they started by imitating Hasselblad and had a couple of the big old cameras in the museum.

All of this optical equipment stuff was a big part of

  • What does "Iconic Japan's Toshiba" mean in this context?
    • Hackers targeted Hoya.
The hackers used ransomware in the attack.
Hoya competes with Toshiba in hard disk platter glass and other semiconductor tech.
Hoya also makes eyeglass and contact lenses. This is their main business.
The attack only occured at Hoya's US operations.
Both Hoya and Toshiba are from Japan.
It is unclear which is iconic, of Toshiba, Hoya, or Japan.

    • What does "Iconic Japan's Toshiba" mean in this context?

I thought at first that 'Iconic Japan' was an entity, and that it has a rival to Toshiba called 'Hoya.' After reading the summary I still can't parse the headline.

    • "What does "Iconic Japan's Toshiba" mean in this context?"

It means the person who wrote it and thought it was a well-constructed phrase, suitable for a headline read by thousands, will commit to not writing anything for public consumption ever again.

Just kidding. "Msmash" is of course a Slashdot EDITOR, proud of the work she does.

It means the article's author had never heard of Hoya, and their web search came up with articles about them making hostile takeover bids for NuFlare when it was in the middle of being acquired by Toshiba. I'm not sure about the Iconic, maybe the editor's instructions were "who the fuck is Hoya, at least try to tie them to some iconic company that people have heard of" and hence the awkward insertion of the word iconic into the title.

    • I'm pretty sure it means "Toshiba Japan's Iconic Rival". Or maybe "Toshiba's Iconic (in Japan) Rival". They are definitely rivals. And they are definitely in Japan.

One or more of Toshiba, Hoya, or their rivalry may be iconic. Who's to say? Certainly not the person writing the headline, and certainly not the dozens of editors who have copy-pasted this syntactic Picasso. My guess is its source is a bad translation, and then no one was confident enough in its meaning to reword it.

For many people, they are also makers of top quality lens filters for SLRs, DSLRs, and Mirrorless Cameras. A little less expensive than B+W filtes (German company), but almost as good... certainly in the same league. Right around the top for ones that average consumers can afford (even if a little pricey). If you want the secret sauce for super saturated deep colours on landscapes and even pictures of cars, etc., get one of their polarizing filters (or a B+W one if you have the dough). Anyway, they make good glass, too bad this shit happens.

Yup. I have a set of Hoyas and some B+W's that I love...

From a news article scan, the "Toshiba rival" seems to come from a counter-bid they made to acquire NuFlare when it was already in process of being acquired by Toshiba.

Ya'll hear about the geometer who went to the beach to catch some rays and became a tangent ?

Working...
