Intel Says Hacker Obtained Financially Sensitive Information (ft.com) 9

Intel said it was the victim of a hacker who stole financially sensitive information from its corporate website on Thursday, prompting the company to release its earnings statement ahead of schedule.ÂFrom a report: The US computer chipmaker believed an attacker had obtained advanced details about a strong earnings report it was due to publish after the stock market closed, said George Davis, chief financial officer. It published its formal earnings announcement upon discovering the problem, six minutes before the market closed. Intel's shares rose more than 6 per cent on Thursday, including almost 2 per cent in the final 15 minutes of trading. "An infographic was hacked off of our PR newsroom site," Mr Davis said. "We put [our earnings] out as soon as we were aware." He did not provide more details, but said that the leak was the result of an illicit action that had not involved any unintentional disclosure by the company itself. An Intel spokesperson added: "We were notified that our infographic was circulating outside the company. I do not believe it was published. We are continuing to investigate this matter."

...it turns out the leak was due to a compromised IME or some such.

    • Or if it was done using an AMD computer.
Or if it was done using an Apple M1.
      Or if it ...

Sorry, this is way too easy. When one is kicking someone while they are down, then it's most important that it leaves an impression. Wait, I think I've got it:

It will be ironic if it turns out the hack wasn't a hack, but a false flag, caused by old men returning to Intel and the activation of their ancient computer accounts.

      • Did it from my Itanium! On a side note I always wanted an Itanium based box to toy with but they still go for stupid money even today.

  • "a hacker" ... riiiight ...

Let's see what it all looks like, when they find out those books are as "well done" as a shoe sole...

    • I really doubt Intel is cooking the books. Their earnings report was in line with what I was expecting to see for 2020. In a nutshell they lost datacenter market share, easily explainable by stiffer competition from AMD Epyc as well as viable non-x86 challengers as well. And they had massive growth in laptop sales due to COVID. They also wisely forecasted 2021 to have less revenue because those extra PC sales wont last forever. Even if COVID doesn't go away we will hit saturation sooner or later.

  • Details of the Nvidia - Intel OEM lock down....

The fact is AMD's mobile chips have been completely shunned for high end laptops for no reason for at least a generation or two of CPUs.

If the last earnings report had an info graphic at say 'prnewsforintel/2020q4-piechart.jpg' and someone guessed the next one would be 'prnewsforintel/2021q1-piechart.jpg' ,and it was live before the press release, is that really hacking?
  • Hacking a web page? From their description, it sounds like someone did a âoeshow sourceâ on their web page, found something obvious and went from there. Intel should speak to their 1337 HTML c0d3rz about security.

news: gotcha
