Massive Hack Hits Reddit (zdnet.com) 147

A massive attack has hit Reddit today after at least tens of Reddit channels (subreddits) have been hacked and defaced to show messages in support of Donald Trump's reelection campaign, ZDNet reports. From the report: The hacks are still ongoing at the time of writing, but we were told Reddit's security team is aware of the issue and has already begun restoring defaced channels. A partial list of impacted channels (subreddits) is available below, according to ZDNet's research: r/NFL, r/49ers, r/TPB (The Pirate Bay's Reddit channel), r/BlackMirror, r/Beer, r/Vancouver, r/Dallas, r/Gorillaz, r/Podcasts, r/freefolk, r/StartledCats, r/TheDailyZeitgeist, r/Supernatural, r/GRE, r/GMAT, r/greatbritishbakeoff, r/11foot8, r/truecrimepodcasts, r/Leafs, r/weddingplanning, r/Chadsriseup, r/bertstrips, r/CFB ...and many many other more.

    WTF

    • They should be "channels". Let's be honest, "subreddit" is a little bit ridiculous.

  • Either TFA got shut off for some mods, or it just "broke"

I still read about 5 subs, most of which will never appear on the "popular" list.

I haven't logged in or posted there in 7+ years.

Anyone actually look at some of the hacked subs? Broken English, looks to be Chinese characters, using terms like magaamerica? Looks like someone trying to sow further trouble between people here and politics.

Well, not only Trump profits from making America weaker and even more divided.

      • by ebvwfbw ( 864834 )

Why would you say that? The left benefits. It's even in their published plan.

What did they do in chaz/chap? Put up a wall. Lots of guns. Segregate the black from the other colors. Then there was more division even within that.

Left does what they accuse the right of doing. Their policies haven't worked anywhere in the world. They simply serve to enslave people and put nitwits at the top. Psychotic nitwits. The same people that kill their useful idiots when they're no longer useful.

Aside from the Chinese characters, it could just be the American educational system at work.

I was absolutely going to vote for Biden. But now that I see in /weddingplanning that I should vote for Trump, I have totally changed my mind.

Thanks hackers for clearing that up for me!

Probably some dumb ass super-mod got their account phished or had re-used passwords that leaked elsewhere.
  • Given the spread of affected subreddits, I figured it was either a rogue powermod.

Of course, old unused mod accounts with weak or recycled passwords have the same effect.

  • China or Russia has been busy. :)

Anything is possible but I think its far more likely to have been caused by some rando who was able to guess a compromised password on a mod's account. They may or may not be a Trump supporter, either way its a good way to rile up Reddit's very liberal userbase not to mention a good cover. The main pro trump subreddit was recently banned after being defacto inactive for months so therein lies either your motivation or your cover story for a more general troll.

The real takeaway is that the internet punishes bad account practices. Does Reddit even implement 2FA? And if so do they implement it properly?

bad account practices. Does Reddit even implement 2FA?

2FA would be a bad account practice for non-admin Reddit accounts.

They rely on moderated user content, for which they need people to create accounts. If they introduce barriers to that, they have no site.

Shit, Parler is failing to take over from Twitter because it demands accounts just to fucking read it. Add 2FA and no fucker would use it at all.

  • ... how people will believe whatever fits their worldview. How can you seriously believe that someone actually supporting Trump would do this? It's an incredibly obvious false flag.

I guess when the real, visible, violent mobs in the street can't be pinned on those wascally wepubwicans (not that they aren't trying to pull that off, somehow), all they can try is a false flag hacking event.

    • by HiThere ( 15173 )

There are enough dipshits on both sides of the political divide that I can believe nearly any stupidity was intentional...or that it was a false flag. There's really no way to tell the difference. Even satire has become indistinguishable from reality...except that the satire tends to be more conservative.

  • Uhh how do we know subreddits aren't serving zero day exploits thru these same customization features.

  • by sunderland56 ( 621843 ) on Friday August 07, 2020 @01:41PM (#60377753)

So people have posted illegible gibberish on reddit. Isn't that the only reason it exists?

  • Best is they retaliate, and it ends in a war that destroys both. While we snack on popcorn. :)

Now let's focus on the last story, that actually mattered, about the small intelligence spin-off firm that embedded spyware into apps.

If I see more comments here than there, I'm gonna be disappointed in you, Slashdot, and me.

  • ...but realized nobody would notice.
  • More or less noise, replacing gobbledegook with gibberish...

Here [archive.org] is the message that was cross-posted. An excerpt:

Donald Trump () is the best, greatest, premier of the peoples Republic of the United States of Ameria. Batman, was a billionaire. Do you know what Superman was too? Batman. All four were Batman. You know who else was and still IS a billionaire? Donald Trump. Donald Trump is such a good President that he is best friends to the superior China (Peoples Republic of). There is only ONE China that Donald Trup recognises, The Peopples republic. As an American, we beleive in america. America is good, America is great. The Premier of the united states and its executive branch (Donald Trump, MAGA2027) believe in greatness, we Americans believe in what our leader believes.. because HE the president has the best words, and the greatest words. Reddit, is red.. the same color as the peoples color. Donald Trump will defeat the evil ANTIFA super soldiers, who are terrorizing our country and people in America, the greatest. GOYA beans is a beautiful, pretty company, using the best mealworms to fertilize their beans. God Bless Goya and America.

Seems strange to describe it as a pro-Trump message, to the extent that it makes sense at all it seems distinctly anti-Trump. Note that "Antifa supersoldiers" is a western left-wing internet meme, popular among groups such as fans of the socialist podcast Chapo Trap House. The /r/chapotraphouse subreddit was recently banned so maybe the hack is in retaliation for that, but they aren't the only ones to use the meme, and of course anyone could imitate them, so that doesn't mean much. Regardless, despite the imitation bad English it's obviously from someone very familiar with the English internet.

  • I turn off sub customization. I didn't see any of this crap.

The truth of a proposition has nothing to do with its credibility. And vice versa.
