Google Adds Spam Detection and Verified Business SMS To Messages (engadget.com) 14
Businesses often send one-time passwords, account alerts and appointment confirmations via text. But if you've ever received one of those, you know they tend to come from a random number, and bad actors can take advantage of that by disguising phishing scams as one of those messages. To protect users, Google will soon verify SMS messages from registered businesses. From a report: When you receive a message from a verified business, you'll see the company name, logo and a verification badge in the message thread. Businesses must sign up to use Verified SMS, and so far, 1-800-Flowers, Banco Bradesco, Kayak, Payback and SoFi are on-board. Verified SMS is rolling out gradually in the US, Brazil, Canada, France, India, Mexico, Philippines, Spain and the UK. Google is also adding real-time spam detection. When Google suspects a message is phishy or garbage, it will show a spam warning in Messages.

One way or the other, someone pays for a service. If you're not paying directly (e.g with Apple), you're paying indirectly (e.g. with Google).

People are OK with this due to a paradigm shift in culture over the last two generations. When I was young we actively tried to avoid government surveillance we were certain existed (but didn't, as the tech just wasn't there) and were branded 'paranoid.' Undoubtedly true to some extent as we thought nearly everyone with unpopular opinions was wiretapped.
The current generation has just accepted that de-facto surveillance that actually now does exist in favor of convenience. The simply don't fucking care that they are surveilled as it's become so ubiquitous that it's now background noise and they choose to forget it's there.
A good example is a cop with a camera. Some have been caught planting evidence. Now he should realize he's being watched, but forgets about it even though the camera is on his damned chest.
It's unfortunately cultural in nature in my opinion. Education won't help because everyone already knows this and chooses not to care.
We are truly living in interesting times.

This is for Google's Android phone software. We trust them because they're Google, somebody we already know to be good, and they control this OS already. Now, where's Apple's implementation, or can they sneak this into the already existing Google Authenticator?

SMS seems to be a disliked protocol by the 5G implementors... so what this says is we've got to get better sender ID fields in new messaging protocols, and we might want to retrofit this into e-mail.
