Voter Records For 80% of Chile's Population Left Exposed Online (zdnet.com) 44

An anonymous reader writes: "The voter information of more than 14.3 million Chileans, which accounts to nearly 80% of the country's entire population, was left exposed and leaking on the internet inside an Elasticsearch database," reports ZDNet. "The database contained names, home addresses, gender, age, and tax ID numbers (RUT, or Rol Único Tributario) for 14,308,151 individuals...including many high-profile Chilean officials."

A spokesperson for the Chile Electoral Service said the data appears to have been scraped without authorization from its website, from a section that allows users to update their voting data. Chile now joins countries as the US, Mexico, Turkey, and the Philippines, whose voter information was gathered in bulk and then published online in one big pile, easy to access for any crooks.

  • Computer networks are designed to SHARE information foremost. Security was bolted on later. If you don't want information shared, don't put it on a network. Put it in in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.'

We've heard time and time again that the most secure computer is the one powered off in a closet. The problem with that mentality is you don't have a "secure computer" anymore. You've got worthless shit..

Security has always been a double-edged sword. Too much, or not enough, will hurt you. The answer is to identify risks and mitigate them, not create or suggest worthless shit that even your Guide reference validates.

Learn best practice from the NSA and CIA. Keep a nations important files away from global computer networks.
Do some nation level compartmentalization for data experts and people working on the data.
Need to see a full data set? Drive it around in a secure van with full crypto.
Add to a data set? Thats a few hours to collect a nations population changes and the secure records every few hours.

  • After all, it was readily accessible to corrupt government employees before. The change is that you don't have to work for the government anymore.

Most government employees in Western Nations are law abiding citizens who are not corrupt, otherwise nothing government related would function. It is usually only the top tier "Officials" who got there because they thought they could profit from graft. See the current Russian and American Administrations for the evidence...in a few years, it will just be Russmerica, Moscow Mitch will be proud.

I tell them to turn to the study of mathematics, for it is only there that they might escape the lusts of the flesh. -- Thomas Mann, "The Magic Mountain"
