Can Wayne Inouye Save Gateway?

He could offer Linux pre-installed on all their systems. :-)

At the very least, he could have someone fix Gateway's ordering pages. If you try to order, say, a Gateway 310B, it comes with Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition by default, the Web page for it shows a message that says "Gateway recommends Microsoft Windows XP Professional." If you select customize, though, you're stuck with XP Home Edition -- there's no XP Professional option!

Can Wayne Inouye Save Gateway? No!

Like any desk jockey executive, he will kick back, collecting a multi-million dollar salary plus bonuses that will bankrupt the company, and laugh all the way to the bank. Gateway will be kaput by 2006, and that is a generous estimate.

After reading the article "cut costs" seems to be the theme... put an e-Machine in a cow print box... voila, your new gateway! Kind of reminds me of the first Toyota/Lexus models...

I remember when I bought my first PC from Gateway - it was a great company then. Good support, decent hardware at a reasonable price, etc.

After all the changes, though, I seriously have to wonder if it's worth saving.

Q: How are you going to compete against Dell, which has lower costs, and HP, which spends more on research and development?

A: I plan to create a cost structure that is lower. That's going to take some time--it doesn't happen overnight. But it will happen fairly quickly.

Does this mean we're going to see the next big price war? I don't really care either way, but anything that brings component prices down is good for me.
