Politicians wanted to polarize and divide people for a LONG time, now they got their wish. Only it backfired. Economically, socially, even created rifts between members of the same family. All for what? Equally shitty candidates and political agendas. Achievement unlocked, your country is now fucked.
This is the end result of the stupid plurality-wins election system we use in the U.S. (the candidate who gets the most votes wins). It causes people voting for third parties to essentially waste their vote, causing the system to gravitate towards just two parties (that's the optimal solution for getting elected in plurality wins). When you have just two parties, that maximizes the difference between parties (the centers of both parties have the greatest separation).

Not just a better voting system, the whole system of government needs to be reformed to encourage coalitions and distribute power instead of concentrating it.
I'm yet to be proven wrong. OK, pedantic mode on: there could be a small shittiness difference, so the correct way of putting it would be: "they are all shitty, albeit to different degrees". Better?

It didn't backfire for them, it's working out great. It's only bad for us.
