Even in the Mac and Linux world x86 and Windows compatbility rears its ugly head. We need tools like Parallels (or UTM/Qemu) to bridge the gap. The fact that Microsoft and Intel/AMD conspire together is why we have had over 40 years worth of x86 computer monopoly. Microsoft coudn't escape it (remember the architechtures that NT 4 supported), and neither can Intel (the failure of the Itanium).
