Anonymous Stallion writes "Two security researchers from TippingPoint (sponsor of recent CanSecWest hacking contest fame) were able to infiltrate the Kraken botnet, which surpasses the size of its botnet predecessors. The researchers published a pair of blog entries (Owning Kraken Zombies and Kraken Botnet Infiltration) dissecting the botnet and going so far as to suggest that they could cleanse the botnet by sending an update to infected hosts, however they didn't do so due to legal concerns. This brings up the old debate of whether "friendly worms" that issue software fixes have any merit. What do you think? Is it better to let the botnet continue unabated, or perhaps risk crashing a computer hooked up to a heart monitor?"
