Lucas123 writes "Computerword's Dian Schaffhauser has written a story quoting a World Bank executive saying a data loss similar to the UK's data mishap, which saw the private information of 15 million people go missing last month, could have already happened at the Internal Revenue Service "and we don't know about it." While the IRS offers encryption of data to its workers, more than half of its 94,000 employees have permission to have taxpayer and sensitive information at locations outside of IRS offices. The World Bank official says the government is the "most behind as a sector" in the area of data protection — "certainly behind the financial services sector." If a breach occurred at the IRS, it could involve not only basic personal information about 128 million individual tax returns filed in the 2007 filing season, but also banking information from 46% people who requested direct deposit refunds."
