Russia Says Foreign Spies Plan Cyber Attack On Banking System (reuters.com) 88

Russia said on Friday it had uncovered a plot by foreign spy agencies to sow chaos in Russia's banking system via a coordinated wave of cyber attacks and fake social media reports about banks going bust. From a report on Reuters: Russia's domestic intelligence agency, the Federal Security Service (FSB), said that the servers to be used in the alleged cyber attack were located in the Netherlands and registered to a Ukrainian web hosting company called BlazingFast. The attack, which was to target major national and provincial banks in several Russian cities, was meant to start on Dec. 5, the FSB said in a statement. "It was planned that the cyber attack would be accompanied by a mass send-out of SMS messages and publications in social media of a provocative nature regarding a crisis in the Russian banking system, bankruptcies and license withdrawals," it said. "The FSB is carrying out the necessary measures to neutralize threats to Russia's economic and information security."

I pray god that there will be one more bank run. I made quite a lot of money last December, when zerglings stormed banks and currency was traded at 15% spread.

Currency was trading at more like a .015% spread. Retail customers got a 15% spread.

  • Sounds more like some Russian Trolls got pissed off at smaller budgets/pay and decided to use the EXACT SAME TACTICS against the bosses.
  • ... Hillary Clinton, you ass wipes.

Hillary couldn't secure her own email server and you think she has the peeps to attack Russian banking in retribution. Even in jest that is ridiculous.

    • Think all those Dem honchos, like Debbie Wasserman Schultz, John Podesta, Jennifer Palmieri, et al are so pissed at being out of a job (DWS' house wages notwithstanding) that they've decided to try looting some Russian banks. But given where the ruble is wrt the dollar, they'd have to loot plenty of it. Maybe try and hack Putin's bank account
      • RTFA

It's not looting, it's fake news to create a run on the banks.

None of the people you mention are out of jobs.

        • The first one ain't. The next 2 are, unless they've gotten something new w/ the Clinton Foundation

The 5th of December is a dutch holiday, where Saint Nicolas gives presents to children. A bit like Father Christmas in the USA. In fact, "Santa Claus" is related to the dutch name for Saint Nicolas, "Sinterklaas".
  • I seem to remember, not too long, some high up Russian official laughing at the idea they would try to interfere with U.S. elections through hacking, or that they were involved with the Wikileaks email, or other related issues in the U.S. I can't remember the exact words but the word "delusional" was definitely in there.

Now, suddenly, Russia is claiming that foreigners are going to supposedly target the Russian banking system and oh yeah, they come from Ukraine.

How odd they should say this. Why would anyone

Russian banking system is the money laundry of the world. When mafiosos run away to America, local banks loose no moneys.

I'm sorry. I missed the part where they blamed Ukraine? Can you find me the quote? I must have left my reading glasses at the mental institution.

I also understand that you know nothing about Russia and Ukraine and the relationship between the people that live there :)

There's plenty to be sceptical about in Ukraine, but maybe start out with scrutinizing the new government and get some perspective and history on your rant ;)

You probably also think that people on Crimea hate the Russians :)

In fact please wipe out all bank loan records and records of liens. The american banking system needs to crater into ashes because it's only a tiny step above organized crime.

I know, right? Expecting people to pay back the loans they agreed to... And even threatening to *gasp* take back big-ticket items like houses and cars used as collateral for the mortgages? Might as well just give out bank-branded kneecapping sticks, amirite?

Banks certainly have their flaws, and make no mistake, we have some outright bad-actors like Wells Fargo. But as a whole, I have zero sympathy for people whining that their creditors actually dare to expect repayment. If you can't afford something,
  • People OUTSIDE Russia hacking Russia.

  • The West has to get its hits in now before Trump comes to office and rewards the Russians for their help during the election.

  • Good. /grumpycat
  • I was under the impression that the Russian banking system was already in a state of chaos. International banks are fleeing the country, and anyone with any appreciable assets has them stashed in Switzerland.
  • This means that the Russian banking system is about to crash, and Putin needs to get his cover story "hackers did it" out there better than Hillary did.
