sp3298622 writes "The CertMag Salary Survey is now available, seems like the Cisco CCIE's get the top salaries and the Apple Helpdesk portable technicians are left with peanuts. According to the survey, it's financially more lucrative to study Linux fundamentals and be LPIC Certified rather than MCSE."

    It's heartbreaking to think how much work went into creating that utterly unusable and unreadable interface. It's very nicely done, just completely misguided.

      Amen,

      I went to it, watched it load, said, woah, cool.

      Then I clicked on right arrow, watched the page turn and thought: nice, but too slow.

      Of course, I had to put my nose on the screen to read it, and then realized: There is no way in hell I am going to read an entire article like this, even with zooming.

      Anyone have a copy of the article in Times New Roman, valid html so I can use my browsers's (FF) text enlargement functions?

    • Reminds me of the mid-90s websites. Everything was as flashed and shockwaved, and javascripted as possible. Those were the days when big was good. I remember plenty of highly unreadable websites which took 4 minutes to load on 28.8k dialup, but had a coolfactor.

      The same effort that was put into building this interface, couldve been used to put it into sgml, or at least xhtml. They want the layout preserved? PDF! Even a series of GIFs like some online books would be easier.
  • Isn't this one of MS's salvos against Linux? That the TCO of Linux is higher because the techs command more money? Be careful of what you wish for - you might just get it.

  • Is that just about the gayest format you've ever encountered? I mean, Flash is required to read a text page, and downloading requires a Flash engine? WTF?

    Pray tell, how does this format improve on the usefulness and versatility of HTML?

      Because now they can lock you out of saving the text or images from the article if they want, and prevent you from linking directly to a certain page of the magazine, etc. In other words it's good for them, not for the web surfers...
  • Am I the only one to have read that "CertMag Slavery Survey Shows Where IT Money Is" ?
  • I am from Australia, and the last page says that the average IT salary here is $36640 AUD, or $49,220 USD. This implies that the $AU is more valuable than the $US. Either they are predicting the future collapse of the $US, or they should have the reciprocal. Replacing their maths with my dubious maths, this means that the average salary here is $66119 AU if the $US is to be believed, or a measly $27275 US if the $AU is to be believed.
  • I couldn't help notice how awesome the reading software was! Looks just like a print magazine, complete with page turn effects! And some of the graphics is animated too! Ah, print is dead, my friend...
    • If they'd stuck to HTML or PDF then I might have bothered to read their crap. As it was the font was too small for my laptop.

      Print isn't dead it's alive and well and sitting in your local bookstore.
